I hit my midback and now I have pain – should I see a doc or are there treatments I can do at home?

diosa78 asked:

I hit my back on a metal cage (I was bending down and when I went to stand up I smacked myself with a metal bar). I feel a bruised vertebra in my mid back and now I have pain radiating down my left thigh. I can’t lie on my back, touch my spine in that place or sit back in a chair without pain – not excrutiating but painful (ie it has produced tears from my eyes). I am taking Lortab and still have pain. Will going to a doctor help any? Any suggestions for at-home treatment?

I would give it a week to see if it subsides. If its not better in a week, then I would recommend going to a doctor to get an MRI. Pain in the thigh / leg after a hit in the back sounds like Sciatica. That is caused by a disc pushing on the sciatic nerve which causes pain in the left or right leg. That usually indicates that a disc has swollen or shifted.

An MRI can show the disc in detail and doctors can usually tell if further treatment is necessary. It may be that the disc has swollen and a spinal epidural could reduce the swelling & relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve & aleve the pain. If the disc has shifted, they would probably perscibe a pain killer and recommend either rest or physical therapy to strengthen your core muscles around the back and help move the disc back into place.

Sciatica can be very painful and is serious enough to get it checked out. If it has shifted and goes untreated, it could move further down the road and result in excruciating pain.

    Good Luck

Maybe what you have done is bruised the pereosteum( the thin membrane which covers all bones ) The Tx of choice is analgesics(pain medication) and muscle relaxants. A good OTC muscle relaxant is Robacicet. Without a full examination, it’s difficult to tell if you have a fracture or just bruised a muscle. If your ROM(range of motion) is limited, your might have just a muscle problem. If the pain and stiffness persists, see your DR. He or she can do a serious of X-Rays to rule out any fractures. Stronger pain medication and muscle relaxants can be prescribed as well.
