Normally there are 5 lumbar vertebrae. However during fetal development, the first sacral vertebra somehow failed to develop as it should, hence an individual may have what seems to be an extra lumbar vertebra as seen on Xrays which may or may not be similar anatomically with the other 5 lumbar vertebrae, depending on how much “lumbarization” there is. There are exercises which can be done for the back pain which can come with the condition but it is better for you to seek the expert advise of a rehab medicine specialist first.

Hi!!!!!!!!! All i know is that i had my lumber fused due to severe scoliosis and you don’t want that!!! Start going to get any type of physical therapy you can. As a result of my back i just had to have a total hip replacement and now my legs are about 2 inches (it feels like) difference in height…………………..it’s been just awful!!!!!!! But good luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before you try surgery – learn a little about muscles, how they could be a major player and possibly how to get rid of your pain. There is a book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies that can explain it better than I can. If it were me I would work with a chiropractor and/or massage therapist who has this information condensed down like this.
