how to determine whether back pain is due to epidural?

bsk k asked:

My wife took epidural for her delivery. Its been 8 days she is getting back pain. but the pain is at back lower part not near to epidural site. Am not sure the pain is due to epidural or something else. She had normal delivery and wearing stomach binder. she is getting this pain only when gets up from bed or after sitting for long time. If she walks for sometime pain goes away. Is there anyway to determine the pain is due to epidural or something else?

That might be the cause, but why do you care? Treat the symptoms.

It’s probably just due to having a baby 8 days ago. She could still be cramping also or just having back pain.

her uterus is shrinking back and it is prefectly normal. She will have pain on and off for the next 5-6 weeks. If she is nursing, usually the cramping is right when you nurse.

It does not sound like it is from the eppi. Sounds like her back muscles are weak and sore. She needs to get up and walk more. It will hurt, but she MUST build up her muscles again.

My back pain is right where I had my epidural. If is prob not from the epidural honestly. It is prob just strained. Treat it the same way you did in pregnancy unless you are bottle feeding then take something.

HI there! I had just finished a childbirth class and they said that lower back pain that could last up to two months is a possible side effect of the epidural and that is happens in around 25% of women. Hope that helps!
