How long do we have post op pain after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had a wisdom tooth removed a week ago. I am on pain killers , but still have have pain around the clock. The meds help with the pain but does not eliminate it completely. I can barely chew food.
Any suggestion to other treatments that would help in the healing process?
It does look like it is healing and swelling has diminished, but still, pain is there.
PS; This was a impacted tooth which was difficult to pull out.
