Question by cindymb19: pelvic mass causing sciatica?
about 2 months ago, i had a mri for sciatic pain and they found a cyst in my pelvis(cant remember where it was actually), i never got it checked out because i thought that it would just go away-well recently, i went to a spine doctor for sciatica pain i had been experiencing the past few months (since about december 2009). the doctor told me that i have a herniated disc in my lower back, but it is too small and is not causing the sciatica nerve pain ( i was already given steriods and anti-immflammory drugs, but they did nothing). he told me that there is a mass on my right pelvis that is most likely putting pressure on my sciatic nerve, which results in my sciatica pain. i just wanted to know if anyone else ever experienced this, because i am a little stressed out about it. i was referred to a pain management doctor and i am waiting for him to contact me to schedule an appointment. but my concern is, how large could this mass be to be causing this sciatica pain? should i expect some form of surgery? or what are other treatment options? does anyone know what kind of cyst this could be?

Best answer:

Answer by Van Bo
I would blame the herniated disc. Doctors often underestimate their function in causing serious pain, and they dismiss it or go on to tell the patient that they are getting TMS. The pressure on the sciatic nerve, pain and immobility is real.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tension_myositis_syndrome

The pelvic mass is most likely ossification. It should be scraped off if causing other problems.

Question by : Are my symptoms related to my scoliosis? and how serious is it?
Im 17. I found out i had scoliosis about 1 and a half years ago. i started having pain since i was like 13/14. it was mainly just in the back of my right shoulder. the pain didnt start off bad…just a slight discomfort in the mornings when i woke up. it progressed to a more intense pain over the years. i stopped school when i was 15 because of some issues my family was having. when i realized the pain wasnt just a random thing from time to time i started complaining bout it to my mom. she took me to the chiropractor. i went to about 4 different ones and nothing helped. what i thought was wrong with me was that when i was like 13 this girl fell on my right rib cage and my mom had taken me to the chiropractor and they fixed it. so i thought maybe it was just my ribs that were causing the pain in my shoulder. Every chiropractor had their own reasons why they thought i had the pain. none of the reasons made sense and the pain kept coming back. Then about nearly 2 years ago i went to a massage therapist who was new to where i live. he did a quick scan of me while i was standing straight and he said ” looks to me like you have scoliosis” . so then he asked me to lay down and he did a more thorough check of my spine and ribs and my muscles surrounding and asked me a bunch of questions. he explained i had scoliosis and why it was causing me to feel pain and so on. for the first time someone’s explanation made sense. he was the only one who was able to tell that i had scoliosis. im not sure how bad the curve is or to what degrees it is. but my right shoulder is a little over an inch lower than the left shoulder. I got regular treatments at this therapist last year but after half a year my mom stopped taking me there cause she said it costs too much. but by going there i had improved my posture A LOT. but when i stopped going there its got worse again.

The only irregular posture ive noticed is the shoulders and rib cages. when i sit or lie down for a long period of time i start having discomfort in my spine and shoulders.
I get tired very easily and i feel short of breath very easy as well. if i jog up about 12 stairs i have to try and catch my breath when i reach the top and my heart feels like its been running miles.
Im a waitress and ive sometimes noticed that as i walk it feels like my legs start falling asleep “as” im walking or standing up. my arms fall asleep very easily too. but ive also been told my blood level is too low. ive taken treatments a few times to bring it back up but it doesnt take long till it drops way back down.
I have extreme chest pains sometimes when i wake up. it makes my breathing a little bit difficult and so i start walking around the room and stuff. but sometimes the pain is so bad i feel like hitting my chest to get my heart to beat better or to make the pain stop. and with that intense pain i dont feel like sitting down nor standing up.
Just recently ive noticed that i have this strange feeling in the right side of my chest. idk how to explain it but its almost like my heart flutters {i think its the best way i can describe it}. it does that for about 10-15 seconds and then it stops. and then half an hour later i feel it again and for almost all day the same thing happens over and over. when it flutters and if i put my hand on the part where i feel it, i can feel something throbbing inside there. it feels like a really rapid heart beat but im not sure my heart is located there. and when the fluttering stops the heart-beat like feeling stops too. and also i dont feel it every day, only occasionally. So im wondering if its my heart causing this or what it is. Is it a serious heart condition? Also ive felt this same feeling in my legs from time to time.
And i have a terrible self esteem. not sure if its related to my scoliosis in any way, but i have problems thinking highly of myself. Ive struggled with issues of wanting to just die already. when people say negative things bout me i tend to feel hurt easily and end up hating myself. if someone yells at me i get nervous and start feeling my nerves tremble.

I know people would say i need to go see a doctor but please understand i dont have the money to go to a doctor cause they charge lots and i dont know how much help they could really be. i dont just want some subscription that just stabilizes it for a short period of time and just make me have to go to the doctor again and again and again.

Anways….again, i dont know if any of these symptoms are related to my scoliosis but i’d like if theres any answers as to if these things are related or how serious the symptoms really are…i would really appreciate any advice or comments or answers you all have. and thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by formerly_bob
There’s probably more than one thing going on. Scoliosis may be one problem. The heart stuff could be any number of things but its not likely to be related to scoliosis. There’s no way to know anything about your heart symptoms without a doc listening to your heart and getting an EKG, but the symptoms look like they might be caused by anxiety. There isn’t any simple solution for your situation. The best thing you can do is probably stretching and strengthening exercises, and work on restoring your posture. It would probably be worthwhile to see a physical therapist at least once to learn how to fix your own problems, even if it costs a bit. You can try the stuff at the link.

Question by karatoto74: A Degenerative Disc Disease question?
I have a DR’s appointment on Tuesday regarding Degenerative Disc Disease that I have in my lower back. I have had several treatments for this including; cortizone injections, physical therapy, massage therapy just to name a few. I am currently on Percocet 7.5mgs. I want to stop taking these so bad. The pain is the worst pain of life and is completely ruining my life! I am 28 years old and can not function like a normal human being. What can I expect from this appointment? Will they offer some kind of surgery even though none of my nerves are being impacted? Will the orthopedic doctor just dimiss me? I am so nervous that I am going to have to live with this pain for the rest of my life. Anyone one else have this? What treatments did you receive?

Best answer:

Answer by nickybickyboppers
I have a friend with this and it seems that the doctors would just rather giver her more pain pills then to do surgery. You have to be really worse off-in a wheel chair cuz of it etc. before they will do surgery. I’m sorry that this is not good news, but its exactly what i think they will do to you.

God can take away your pain-Jesus’ stripes are for our healing. If you believe you can be healed then you will be.I will pray for you. God Bless!

Question by : 15 year old son victim of police brutality or standard procedure?
my son was taken into custody by an officer. (he was not arrested and no papers have been served, although he was cuffed and taken to the station). they didn’t read him his rights the whole time. my son caught a matchbook on fire, on top of a picnic table, and a passerby alerted police. when the officer got there, he told my son to stand up, and while he was getting up, the officer jerked him up off the bench by his coat hood, and about 4 ft away from the table, slammed him face down in the mud. (the force actually ripped his bookbag strap off) the officer then placed his knee into my sons lower back, and placed handcuffs on him. there WERE witnesses who stated that there was no reason for this harsh treatment of my son, one of which is my sons r.o.t.c. battalion commander. she stated she ran over to the officer to try to get him to stop and they told her to “back the f up”. my son suffered jaw pain, and a swelled cheek for days, welts on his wrists from the cuffs (although he told the officer they were too tight) muscle strains/sprain of his upper and lower back. he has had problems sleeping, he refuses to go to school for fear they will come arrest him there (they still havent said or served him anything for the fire). the officer who “arrested” him, said that HIS shoes were wet and that he “accidently fell” bringing my son down with him. when i asked how he fell 4 ft from the table another officer said my son struggled and they had to “put him down to subdue him”. not sure what to do about this situation!!!
first of all, my son was doing what the officer stated and standing up, secondly, the shift commander of the officer, is investigating the incident, because HE said it was a bit extreme. my son is an A honor roll student, enrolled in rotc, and is graduating a year early. he made a mistake and should be punished for that mistake, but if a parent had treated thier child the way this officer did, we would be arrested for abuse.

Answer by Skeet
You’re lucky they didn’t arrest the ROTC commander for interrupting a police investigation. Teach your son the importance of following the instructions of the police, and he won’t be manhandled.

Edit: No arrest, no reading of rights necessary.

Question by brittani8502: Dr’s thought I miscarried now they are saying I am still pregnant but can’t find the baby..what is going on?
I found out I was preg by taking two home test which both didn’t show positive until 10 mins later. Then two days later I start bleeding and having mild cramping, the same night I passed a large clot that was like flesh then I passed two smaller blood clots. I went to an urgent care and my HCG levels were only 67 and the 1st day of my last period was Nov 7th so they thought for sure I miscarried since I was about 7 weeks. (my periods are very off so it was hard to tell for sure) Then a week later I start cramping really bad and the pain is getting worse and worse and my back hurts very bad along with breast tenderness so I go back to urgent care and they did a urine preg test which came back positive then they tested my HCG levels again and they were 1057 so then they do an ultra sound and they cant find the baby so they think I have an eptopic pregnancy and send me to the ER to expel the rest of the baby. When I get to the ER they refuse to do the procedure (I cant remember the name but it was a chemo therapy treatment) so they test my HCG levels again (the same night) and they were 880 and they still can’t find anything when they did an ultra sound. They wanted me to wait a few days and have my levels tested again. But me and my boyfriend are really confused and don’t know what to think. THey think I might still be pregnant but it doesn’t make any sense. Im not bleeding anymore…I was just spotting for a few days but I am still in alot of pain in my abdoment which it hurts more to the left and in the center and my lower back is still killing me. Has anyone ever experienced this?
I have another dr appt later on today. The ER dr doesnt think it is eptopic and he thinks im still pregnant bc my HCG levels are INCREASING usually they decrease when you miscarry but mine are going up and down so it is weird. Im just wondering if this has happened to anyone else bc all of the drs are telling me different and I dont know what to think.

Question by star_lite6000: What would of reasonable settlement be?
I was rear ended while stoped at a light. I got 2 bulged disc, pinched nerves, tmj, and alot of pain. I’ve been going to treatment since 2-8-10 3 times a week. I exhausted the no fault check of 10,000 about 2 weeks ago. My chiropractor wants me to go in for another mri for my lower back now.I feel like I’m in for another couple of months of therapy.I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough coverage to cover my medical bills but my lawyer said the guy had a good insurance plan with a max limit of $ 250,000 and to get the help I need. After everything is said in done I’m looking at about $ 5000 in pocket after the medical and lawyer fees. Is that a reasonable offer.

Best answer:

Answer by Cindy M
After the $ 10K and $ 250K you are saying that you will only walk away with $ 5K? Gosh, I don’t know that we are qualified to answer that. If that is the limit of his insurance (250) and he doesn’t have an umbrella policy or other assets he could pay you a settlement with…then $ 250K may be all that he has to offer. Furthermore, suing for his other assest could take years, and you’ll have to ask yourself if it is worth it. I know that most cases can be settled out of court for 3 times the medical bills (unless there is gross negligence)… your lawyer may take 33 1/3 or more.

Question by Me: very painful periods, please help?
I have had my period for about 10 years. They have always been excruciatingly painful with pain in the front of my abdomen and up my back during my periods, radiating down my legs and making my feel very weak, and I often see spots/stars in my vision during my periods like I am going to pass out, presumably from the pain. I also often have pain during my periods where it BURNS around the opening of the vagina (sorry!). It really hurts, and only happens during my periods.

I’ve had normal pap smears and normal results from routine exams. I haven’t had a transvaginal ultrasound. They tried, but that was not going to happen. I had an abdominal ultrasound at about 16 to investigate the pain, and that was normal. I’ve been placed on the nuva ring every 3 weeks to entirely suppress my periods for the last 4 years. I let myself get my period about 3 times a year. Every time I have had my period, I am nonfunctional, have to stay in bed all day, and the pain is literally excruciating. It hurts the most on the lower left side of my abdomen, feels like something is grinding there, and against the inside of my tail bone. I had emergency surgery for a gallbladder attack that was severe, which is supposed to be nearly as painful as childbirth (at least that’s what I’ve been told), and that was on the same level of pain as these cramps. I can hardly stand up when I have my period because it’s so painful.

Now for the last 2 years or so, and getting worse as time goes by, I am having abdominal and lower back cramping almost every day regardless of where I am in my cycle. It’s not the same as when I get my period, but it is painful. If I cough, it hurts my abdominal muscles more, and sex makes the cramping worse, or gives me cramps if I didnt already have them that day.

Any idea what this could be? Is it endometriosis? (my ob told me that it’s not worth looking for endometriosis with exploratory surgery because the treatment would be the same as the nuva ring suppression I am on now). Any tests I should ask for?

I am concerned about this affecting fertility, and the “all the time” pain getting worse.

PS: I do not have any sort of STD, etc.
Cramps run in my family but nothing like this.

Question by hunter4u: is dr saying i’m out of the woods?
Dear Doctor,
I had intercourse with a man (vaginal), and gave him unprotected oral sex. I began having symptoms about two weeks after our sex, swollen tonsils, swollen neck lymph nodes night sweats, leg bumps which my doctor called follicular something, redness all over my face, rash on my back, low grade fever, EBV, mono, gonorhea, chlamydia, and all tests showed to be negative. At about 3 or 4 months post exposure I came down with a high fever for one day, thought I was getting the flu but it was gone the next day and I was left with swollen lymph nodes everywhere, they are highly painful in my chest area, making me cry @ work even. The CT scan said many enlarged nodes, not sure when/if they’ll biopsy. I took a DNAPCR @ the 5 month time and an ICMA through labcorp, they were negative, but the power was out in our city for 9 days due to ice storm(oklahoma) at the time and I worry about the results (transporting, contaminating, blood arriving late). At 6 months and 9 days I took oral test, it was negative. I continue to have the most awful pain in my lymphnodes (elbows, chest, collar bone area, neck, left side of groin. I’m mostly worried because the scan shows enlarged nodes.
Could the high dose steroids given to me when my throat was sore effect the result?
What effect does being HLA-B27 positive have on test results or antibody production?
Would my lymph nodes still be swollen & the folliculitis still be abundant nearly 7 months later?
Do you advise that I take another test? While it will be protected, I’d like to have sex with my guy without feeling guilty – I don’t want to disclose all of this if it isn’t necessary.
Two months later, the guy claims he had a negative result, his ex wife is an IV drug user in a poor economic area, and I can’t help but be concerned.

What do you make of all this? My doctor says he doesn’t even know who to refer me to.
There are many causes of enlarged lymph nodes, and HIV is one of the least common. Your test results prove HIV is not the cause in your case.

No medication is known to alter the reliability of HIV test results; there are theories about immunosuppressive drugs, potent chemotherapy, and the like, but few or no actual cases documented. High dose corticosteroids might do it, but only if taken for weeks on end; a brief course of treatment wouldn’t change anything, and in any case you were long off the treatment during your later tests.

As you likely know, people of HLA type B-27 are at increased risk of certain autoimmune diseases, but not to altered reliability of HIV test result.

On top of all that, you describe very low risk exposures in terms of HIV. Oral sex carries almost no risk and you give good evidence your partner wasn’t infected. But even you were at very high risk, it wouldn’t matter: the test results always tell the correct story.

Bottom line: Continue to work with your personal health care provider(s) to address the real cause of your symptoms and the enlarged lymph nodes. But put HIV out of your mind. You don’t have it.

I hope this helps. Best wishes– HHH, MD

Answer by BJC
The doctor’s response to the information you have provided is right on the money (correct).

From what you have described, HIV is NOT the cause. However, you have some pretty intense symptoms and something obviously seems to be wrong. But HIV is not the cause.

EDIT: To answer your question about HLA-B27…..
The HLA stands for Human Leukocyte Antigen. There are many different types and B27 is just one of them. We don’t know everything about this particular antigen yet. We know that it is strongly associated with certain autoimmune diseases (diseases where the immune system goes haywire and begins attacking things it shouldn’t). Diseases like reactive arthritis, enteropathic arthritis with inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s Disease, ankylosing spondylitis….and probably 5 or 6 more. They are fairly rare and not everyone with HLA-B27 gets them. And some people without HLA-B27 get some of them. Again, we don’t know everything about it yet.
It doesn’t CAUSE the diseases as far as we know, but it somehow seems to contribute to them.

Question by insurancelady82: Question about auto accident and whether or no to contact an attorney…?
So I was in an auto accident back in November. I drove a focus, the other car was a mid 90′s suburban, and it side wiped me, and knocked my car over a lane. Luckily, no one was in the other lane, but it messed up my neck and lower back pretty bad.

I’ve been seeing a chiropractor since about a week after the accident, and he told me that it would be approx 6 months of treatment. It’s been about halfway through the time frame, and while I am better, my neck still hurts. I work an office job, so it’s got nothing to do with work.

I just found out today that the other person’s insurance is claiming that I have gone beyond a “reasonable” time for treatment, and that I am not supposed to go anymore, even though I’m still in pain. (I should note that I work for the insurance company that I am insured by, and so was the other party). My boss (an agent w/some claims background) has suggested that I may want to see an actual physician (as opposed to just the chiropractor) and get an “official” opinion. I’m thinking I may need to start looking at an attorney as well.

In order to avoid any additional expenses, I did stop going for now, as I can’t afford to risk any out of pocket expenses beyond what I’ve been treated for. But, I still hurt.

My question is should I wait and see if they cover all the expenses so far before getting an attorney or should I start looking into that option now? I don’t think its fair that I’m still in pain and am being told that my treatment is “unreasonable”.

Answer by Carla H
Car injury issues can be complicated. I think it would be in your interest to consult with an attorney to better understand the potential issues. It probably isn’t a good idea to just post legal questions on Yahoo (trust me, I had a bad experience), when many of the members don’t know what they are talking about. With such an important issue like personal injury, you def. need to at the very least contact a lawyer, even though I know they can be expensive. When I had a legal problem, I used www.quicklegalanswer.com for my legal stuff and was surprised how fast an attorney answered my question. It was very cheap and helped me put my mind at ease. Anywho, just thought it would be a good idea. If you need anything else, let me know.

Question by : Question about auto accident healthcare?
My wife was hurt in a wreck. The other driver’s insurance company has accepted 100% of the liability. My wife has been treating for months. It really sucks to see her in such pain and needing to go through so much. Our car insurance company has meet our limit, on our end, and she has been using our health insurance to pay many of the medical bills. However, our health insurance does not pay 100% of each treatment, and we owe thousands of dollars, even though none of this was our fault. We are lucky in that we can pay it, but it seems so wrong. I don’t know how people hold up through this.

We were told that the liable car insurance company will not pay anything until my wife has completed her treatment. We do not know how long that will take. My wife has a trip planned for out of the country coming up. She planned it way before the accident. If she receives treatment outside of the nation for a month and then comes back to the states, would the car insurance company be able to use this as a excuse to refuse to reimburse her future treatment, if it is still needed after she returns? I mean, could they claim that she had a lapse in treatment/make a case that she no longer needs it? Could she bring the medical records from the other nation back with her to show that there was no laspe?

The costs of treatment would be lower in the other nation even though she will pay it all out-of-pocket. She does not care if the car insurance company pays back what she spends on the treatment outside of the nation as long as they will pay back any treatments she may need once she returns–if it is needed.

She has a great and stable job and is not looking to milk the car insurance company, but it seems that the system is really on their side as she is having to pay medical bills for something that she did not cause until she is better. The whole ordeal seems like an endless nightmare, and I am grateful for any advice.

Best answer:

Answer by Mushu
I think your best bet is to call the adjuster that’s handling your wife’s claim (the other insurance company, not yours) and ask them directly. They are your best source of information.
