Disc protrusion compressing into my nerves. What could I do? What if no treatment is taken into action?

I recently had an MRI, and the results came back. They said I had a disc protrusion compressing against my nerves. They also suggested to see a neurosurgeon.

I’m only 18 years old, and have no idea what that means, besides the fact that my disc is protruding out into my nerves, causing a lot of pain. The pain has been around almost 2 years now and I’ve decided recently to get it checked out.
Could someone explain what is actually going on, and what might the neurosurgeon actually do to me?

back pain treatment
The neurosurgeon will take a look at it and decide if it’s better to have physical therapy or do surgery. I have the same problem and did PT for a little over a yr, that helped a lot for this past year but the pain is back and I am seeing my dr next month and surgery now. I can’t handle the pain anymore. He has put numerous shots of numbing meds in the spot but that only last 4-6 weeks and he can only do it twice a year due to the resistance that can build up. PT helped a lot, they would have me on a stretching machine that pulled the spine off my nerves but that only lasts for so long. Go see the guy and talk to him about all your options, it’s best to start with PT first if you can and then go from there. If he says surgery right away, get a second opinion before you go under the knife. But do have it taken care of, it sucks having to deal with this like i have for over 20 yrs now.
